Editorial Policy

This site is run by the Yokohama Open Executive Committee: tournament records, a guide to billiard halls, explanations of the rules, and writing about the city of Yokohama. Every page is written with care for accuracy and respect for people and the city.

As an organization that holds tournaments, and one that works alongside its sponsors, we commit to upholding what is set out here.

Facts & Sources

Facts and Sources

  • Facts such as years, figures and names are checked against official information from local governments, sports bodies, businesses and other sources before we write them.
  • For information we have checked, we note the source and the date we checked it.
  • We do not write what we cannot confirm. Where sources disagree, we either give a range or leave the detail out.
  • Secondhand information is written so that it is clearly marked as such, with phrasing such as “it is said that…” or “according to…,” and we make clear whose words they are.
  • Billiard hall rates, opening hours and similar details are checked against the hall’s official information, notices posted at the hall and similar sources, and each page notes how they were checked. Because these can change, please check with the hall before you go.

Records

Tournament Records and Stats

Tournament results and player stats are published from the official records the Executive Committee keeps at each tournament. Whenever we write about results or stats in an article, we always check them against these records.

If an error is found in the records, we correct the records themselves and update the player pages as well.

Five Languages

Reaching Readers in Five Languages

This site can be read in 日本語, 繁體中文, English, 한국어 and Tiếng Việt. We hope to reach not only readers overseas, but also people from other countries who live in Japan.

  • Each language version is based on the Japanese version, and is published only after it has been checked to make sure it reads naturally and accurately for readers of that language.
  • We do not simply carry the meaning across; we write so that the stillness and the space in the Japanese text come through in that language as well.
  • Names of players, teams and places are written the way readers of that language usually see them. Where we cannot confirm how a person’s name is pronounced, we give only the family name.
  • If the versions differ in content, the Japanese version takes precedence.

Respect

Writing with Respect

  • We do not judge players by results alone. We write about matches won and matches lost alike as records and facts.
  • We never lose sight of our respect for long-running tournaments and organizations, for the halls, and for all that those who came before us have built.
  • When we write about a city’s history, we write with respect for the people who live there and those who have lived there. Places that no longer exist are written about as a valued part of the city’s past.
  • We do not use expressions that take a political position, or expressions that hurt people.

Sponsors

Our Relationship with Sponsors

Yokohama Open holds its tournaments with the support of its sponsors. The pages introducing our sponsors, and the company names that appear in tournament titles, are presented as part of our relationship with those sponsors.

The billiard hall guide, the explanations of the rules and our writing about the city are edited by the Executive Committee. We accept no listing fees for them.

Images

Photos and Images

The image at the top of each article is an illustration of its subject, not a photograph of an actual scene. When we publish photographs of the city, we note when and where they were taken.
