August 14 and 15, 2026. Kannai, Yokohama.
Introducing the 14.1 (straight pool) study groups that send their players to SANSIAS presents Yokohama 14-1 Summit.
For now, it is resting.
But they answered us.
The Northwest Chiba 14-1 Study Group.
Takeaki Matsuno founded it in 2014.
A JPBA professional built a study group around his own shop.
Behind it stood those who came before.
The Kanto 14-1 Study Group, run by the professionals Okumura and Yokota.
That experience had stayed with Matsuno.
“Drawing on my time in that study group back then, I tried starting one of my own, centered on the shop.”
What had been handed down, he gave shape to in a place of his own.
It began in Sakura, Chiba, and later moved to Narashino.
At the study group, you learn shot selection and ways of thinking while playing the game.
The goal: to put together runs.
To join, you needed a Bowlliards score of 80 or more.
“It was friendly and relaxed, but there was real passion for getting better.”
That air still lingers in his words.
We asked: 14.1, in a word?
“The core of billiards technique.”
Asked what he loves about it, he laughed.
“There’s so much, I don’t know where to start (laughs).”
Still, we asked him to pick one.
“The way that, without a clear picture in your head, you miss in no time.”
There is no hiding.
That’s what makes it fun.
14.1, he says, is the foundation of the whole game of billiards.
“It will definitely raise your technical base, and I think it can lengthen your playing career, too.”
A professional says so, from his own experience.
For now, it is resting.
But ask, and he answers.
“It’s a discipline I’d really love people to try.”
The weight of those words does not change, even while the group rests.
