It just caught my eye, that’s all. — On bookstores, and pool.

気になっただけ、だった。——本屋と、ビリヤードの話。

Sometimes a book you picked up by chance in a bookstore becomes one you can never let go of.

You weren’t looking for it.
It just happened to catch your eye.
You opened it without much thought, and wanted to keep reading.

That day, you probably expected nothing at all.

Lightning doesn’t strike

When we think of a fateful encounter, we imagine a moment like being struck by lightning.

But the things that truly change a life rarely wear that face.

The binding caught your attention.
The title snagged on something.
You read the first few lines, and your hand would not stop turning the pages —

and the next thing you knew, you were standing in line at the register. That’s all.

Love, work, hobbies — looking back, isn’t that how it usually goes?
You don’t feel you made any great decision.
Something tugged at you, just a little, and you took one more step closer.
That was the beginning.

Pool is like that, too

Ask people “how did you get into pool?” and the answers are mostly alike.

A friend invited me, and I went along without thinking much of it.
I passed by, saw the green tables, and got curious.
It was raining, I had time on my hands, and I wandered in.

No special reason.
But when I held a cue, it was kind of fun.

That alone is enough.

Maybe you just haven’t noticed

In a bookstore, someone puts a book that caught their eye back on the shelf.

In front of a pool hall, someone stops for a moment, then walks on by.

Life goes on without reading that book.
Life goes on without walking into that place.

But if you had opened the door.

Perhaps a day will come when you find yourself thinking that.
