A friend bought a camera.
At first, they said it was just for trips.
But before long, every weekend they were up early, heading out into the city with nowhere in particular to go.
The other day, walking with that friend, they suddenly stopped.
Light slanting in from the corner of an alley was casting a shadow on a wall.
In that moment, my friend’s eyes changed.
Without a word, they pressed the shutter.
They don’t especially want to be a photographer.
But they had been getting up early for that one moment.
One night, reading a book, I happened to look up.
Two hours had passed.
Outside the window, it had grown dark.
What I had been reading wouldn’t leave my head.
I was still thinking about it in the shower.
Still thinking about it before I fell asleep.
It wasn’t that I wanted to know anything.
I only wanted to read.
And yet, before I knew it, a world I hadn’t known had come a little into view.
There is a moment when something you couldn’t do, you suddenly can.
The night a chord you kept fumbling finally rang out clean.
The moment a form that fell apart no matter how often you tried suddenly clicked, one day.
The day a recipe you had nearly given up on was called “delicious” for the first time.
In that moment, and that moment only, even grown-ups cry out.
I think that is what a hobby is.
You want to collect.
You want to know.
You want to get better.
You want to talk about it with someone.
And some days, you just want to lose yourself in it alone.
Those feelings need a way out, and a hobby is the shape it takes.
That is why people absorbed in a hobby somehow look so alive.
The pool hall was the same.
There is someone who takes an hour to choose a cue.
There is someone reading the layout, drawing lines in their head.
There is someone who makes a hard shot and quietly pumps a fist.
There is someone who has been playing for hours, chatting about nothing with the regulars.
And there is someone alone, repeating the same shot in silence.
Each of them is filling something of their own.
And there are people who keep coming back because they love the sound of a ball dropping into the pocket.
Any reason will do.
To have something you can lose yourself in.
That alone makes life a little richer.
