A woman from a client company told me, “Your skin is lovely.”
“Thank you,” I said.
But something about it didn’t sit right.
The moment I saw her skin, I couldn’t quite take the words at face value.
On the way home, waiting at a crossing, the thought came to me.
Toner, serum — I never skip them, not one day.
Even when I’m home late, I never skip washing my face.
I try to go easy on fried food.
And I try to be in bed before midnight.
And yet.
There was something different about her skin.
Clarity, you might call it — her skin itself looked alive.
What was the difference?
There are places that what you apply from outside cannot reach
Our cells contain a coenzyme called NAD+.
Several studies have shown that NAD+ in the body declines with age.
A similar decline has been reported in the skin, and its links to the skin’s homeostasis and repair functions are being studied.
There are places that what you apply from outside cannot reach.
Exercise supports NAD+
Moderate exercise is drawing attention as one way to maintain NAD+.
Aerobic and resistance exercise have been reported to possibly support the metabolic pathways involved in maintaining NAD+.
In addition, a 16-week exercise intervention in middle-aged women reported that both aerobic exercise and strength training significantly improved skin elasticity and dermal structure.
On the other hand, high-intensity exercise also raises the body’s energy demand, so depending on your aim, moderate exercise is thought to be easier to take up.
That night
Exercise was supposed to be good. I knew that in my head.
But I didn’t want to get a tan.
And I felt a little shy about showing skin, like in yoga wear.
While I was thinking about all this, a message came from a friend.
“Want to play pool? I’ve been really into it lately.”
Apparently they had been talked into it on the way home from a class reunion.
So I went along.
I could walk in wearing my everyday clothes.
No tan.
My makeup stayed put.
It was better than I expected.
Skin isn’t only something you tend from the outside.
Your condition within builds up too, little by little.
Perhaps she was someone who cherished that slow building.
That night, when I was praised and still felt a little beaten.
By the time I headed home, I was thinking that next time, I might change a little too.
Why not make pool your next beauty habit?
