Have you ever had this thought at the mirror?
“Something’s off about my face today.”
The same skincare as always, the same foundation — and yet your eyes look smaller.
The outline of your face looks soft and blurred.
Even when you draw on eyeliner, it sinks into the puffiness of your lids.
There are mornings when no cosmetic, however expensive, will finish the look.
It isn’t your makeup
When skin is puffy, excess fluid has built up between the cells.
The texture won’t smooth out, and foundation won’t sit close.
Blush brings out no dimension.
The crease of your eyelids shifts, and your eyes aren’t quite your own.
Other people probably won’t notice.
But you can tell.
And so the day begins, carrying that stress from the morning on.
It isn’t your makeup.
It isn’t your skin, either.
Overnight, the flow slowed and pooled — that’s all it was.
By evening, a different problem
Come evening, it’s your legs that change.
The pumps that slipped on easily in the morning feel tight on the way home.
The curve of your ankles fills in, and the line of your skirt falls apart.
Heaviness, coldness — the body hands the discomfort straight back to you.
Leave puffiness as it is day after day, and the fluid and waste products can sometimes bind with fat cells and turn into cellulite.
It matters to keep things flowing before it starts to bother you.

Walk, get down, shoot
You don’t need intense exercise to relieve puffiness.
The calves are called the “second heart.”
As you walk, the muscles contract and relax over and over, pushing the blood and lymph pooled in your legs back toward the heart — this is the “milking action.”
In a single game of pool, you walk close to 1–2 km.
No running, no jumping.
But you walk around the table, get down, shoot, and walk again.
That rhythm keeps the stalled pump slowly moving.
By the standards of Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, pool has an exercise intensity of “2.5 METs” — the same as yoga or stretching.
It isn’t intense exercise.
You don’t end up drenched in sweat.
Even so, your body is moving more than you think.
Leaning forward into your stance over the cue, the area where your legs meet your hips moves naturally, too.
For a body held in one posture all day at a desk, that alone may be a welcome change.

Nights of laughing, and setting things right
After work, swap your pumps for sneakers.
Go with someone, or go alone.
Miss, laugh, shoot again.
By the end of a few games, you’ve forgotten how heavy your legs felt that morning.
Say that, the next morning at the mirror, you find yourself thinking, “I look good today.”
Then perhaps that day’s face was decided the night before.
